"There are two kinds of light--the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures".
- James Thurber (1894 - 1961)

. . . But not in my Backyard

We've Seen the Light

Thursday, 3 February 2005  What a difference the lights made. When I returned home from work today the lighting for the new shopping center had been turned on and it wasn't even dark yet. They were performing just as they were intended with one hitch, the light of course didn't stop at the property line.

Our backyard, part of our front yard and even inside our home was shining with a glare that was intolerable just as we had predicted. Mr. Roy Drinkard had earlier promised our neighbor that he would make sure we were not affected adversely by the light, that the lights would have shields to keep as much within the borders of the commercial area as possible. Granted, you cannot shield all of the glare from our neighborhood but when the light shining through the lattice work on our carport yields a reverse pattern on the fence across the yard, then it must be seen as too much of a good thing and most definitely infringes upon our rights.

This problem was addressed when the same situation presented itself with the building of the Wal-Mart Supercenter. Our neighbor approached the City and Wal-Mart with the agreement they 'forgot' and shields were placed on the towering parking lot lights. These lights are 300 feet closer towering over our homes. Mr. Roy Drinkard in like manner turned on the lights and Dialsdale was no longer able to see even the brightest star in that direction.

You may say to yourself that is what you get for living in the city and this is true but promises were made and need to be kept. We shouldn't have to come in behind the work and hold those responsible for this construction to their word. A man's word is remembered much longer than the granite stone resting upon his tomb.
