“Anyone
who wants to understand me must first understand
Russell, Kansas. It is my home, where my
roots lie, and a constant source of strength.
My father's view of the world as 'stewers
versus doers' registered early. From my
neighbors, I learned to feel deeply for
God, country and family. In Russell, I
came to understand there are things worth
living for, and, if need be, dying for.
The Russell of my youth was not a place
of wealth. Yet it was generous with the
values that would shape my outlook and
the compassion that would restore life's
richness after I had begun to doubt my
future following the war. Ever since, I
have tried in my own way to give back some
of what the town has given me. I have tried
to defend and serve the America I learned
to love in Russell.”

. . . But not in my Backyard
Friday,
30 July 2004 - All was peace and quiet
until shortly after 7:00a this morning when you
could hear the multiple beeping of equipment
running in reverse and the unbearable vibration
throughout the house. Even under the carport
when I was getting ready to go to work you could
feel the vibration and hear the glass jars in
the recycle bin jingling.
Take
a look at the quote for today to the right. After
reading this I had to believe that Cullman doesn't
represent the same values Russell, Kansas demonstrates.
The values of some of the people in Cullman are
targeted more toward how much more money can
I squeeze out
of this day. Let's move Goody's and Dollar Tree
and Wal-Mart to a better location where we might
be able to earn a better profit. Perhaps we should
re-evaluate the direction Cullman is heading
and take a lesson from one of this country's
best loved leaders who is proud to call Russell,
Kansas home.
If
I am totally off base here, please let me know.
People of Cullman do love their Wal-Mart but
would you want these businesses right in your
backyard . . . literally?
Work
started around 7:00a this morning.
